Artist Statement

Existing between the dream world and awake, my process begins with the surprising forms that cross my semi-conscious mind. The impressions of individuals, scenes in nature, and objects combine, calcify and condense into new elemental shapes.

The screenprinting technique inherently mimics the way my dream visions render themselves in my mind’s eye, one element at a time.  After an initial hand-drawn sketch, I then render my visions as digital sketches, and use both digital and traditional tools to produce each silkscreen.

My work explores the dynamic relationship between humans and nature. What does the evolving path of humanity within the natural world tell us about sustainability, materiality, and reliability? I am fascinated by how nature’s innate rhythms influence us. Yet in the pursuit of engineered perfection, and through our attempts to control or enhance ourselves, each other, and our environments, we often tune them out. I aim to reflect on the beauty, consequence and tensions of this interaction.

By re-interpreting a portrait or landscape through elemental shapes, form, and color, I intend to create space for another rhythmic version of a soul or terrain. A journey into unfamiliar territory, the viewer is invited to piece together their own identifiers, and to consider the delicate balances we strive to build, maintain or disrupt.
