Artist Statement
Existing between the dream world and awake, I envision the people and places that visit my dreams as deconstructed forms. They calcify themselves into their own unique shapes, then get rebuilt, layer by layer, to fill the framework of a flat plane.
The people who play leading roles in our lives often get characterized or molded in ways we want them to fit. We think of them in a setting that is familiar. We see them at a certain age, or with specific people. We create a version of how we want to remember and identify them.
My dreamscapes occur in a world disjointed from any of the conscious mind’s memory molds. My work combines impressions of individuals with the surprising natural forms that cross my semi-unconscious mind. By condensing them into elemental shapes, I aim to give clarity and space for another version of a person or landscape.
The screenprinting process inherently mimics the way my dream visions render themselves in my mind’s eye, one element at a time. My pieces are mostly small scale, short run, limited edition screenprints. This provides for the precision and crisp qualities my shapes are asking for, while allowing for imperfections, exploration, and variation.
